Overview: We are learning about the digestive system. We are going to see what we get from our food, nutrients, where they come from, and their importance to our bodies.
Context: As we learn about the different systems in our body and see what help us each to function, we need to see that in order for us to properly function, we need energy and materials from food. Sunshine State Standards state that this age the student should: know that the human body is made of systems with structures and functions that are related. Students need to learn that there are distinct connections between the good and the body properly repairing itself, or food and growth; even the connection as simple as a lack of iron or carbohydrates can make someone tired.
We are going to explore where nutrients come from and their importance to complete their specific tasks in the body.
Materials:
Computer & Internet access for all students
Overhead projector connected to computer
Microsoft PowerPoint
Day 1: Start discussion with class on their food consumption. Ask questions like: What have you eaten today? Why did you choose to eat those foods? What happened to your food after you ate it? After discussing, show them this YouTube Digestive System Video. Explain to them by reading Your Digestive System which is from The Yuckiest Site on the internet. Then, let them explore in the computer lab Digestive system. Have them click on the button that says "CLICK HERE FOR A FULL DIAGRAM." This has a flash interactive player that if you roll over each part of the digestive system it will show the parts and what they do. Day 2: Have them continue to explore and read about the digestive system. Using the computer lab again, have them explore the Digestive system website more up to page four. Discuss with them after their readings what they have learned about the digestive systems, the different parts and roles of the parts, and what it all does. Ask more discussion provoking questions like What do you think your body uses the energy from food for? If your body didn't get nutrients it needed, what do you think would happen? Day 3: Have the students test their understanding today. Have them go to The Learning Site and play the Building your system game where you drag all of the digestive system parts of the body to their correct part of the body. Then play the Inside story game and the Food path game. The food path game lets you choose different foods and see their digestion. Its key for students to understand that people keep the energy and materials for body repair and growth from the food they eat, and they eliminate the parts of food that are indigestible. Day 4: Talk more today on the what you get from foods. Explain nutrients and their value to our bodies. Be specific as to what they do. Make a PowerPoint Quiz to have the students play as a class that shows the 6 nutrients: water, carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Make it a multiple choice quiz with the nutrient and the purpose being the answer.
Example:
Carbohydrates are...
A. store energy in our bodies.
B. Essential for the regulation of our many body functions..
C. the primary sources of energy for our bodies. Day 5:Using a PowerPoint presentation create a character or use yourself, and show what you or the character has eaten during the day. Then go on to tell how the foods are digested, what your body takes from them, and what they give away. Use pictures of the foods or even mini clips of you eating the food, or chewing the food. Get creative to inspire your students to be creative with their own projects. After explaining what you ate & how it was digested, talk about good eating options and what you put into your body that was not good. Talk about which foods provided the better things for your body.
